Obiettivi formativi
The aim of the course is to provide the basic elements of the climate system working, describing climate as a dynamic and complex system, discussing the main physical mechanisms that determine climate variability at the different scales and distinguishing between internal climate variability and climate change forced by external factors or forcings.Another objective is to provide an overview of the modeling tools used by the scientific community to understand and describe the climate system and its complexity, and to make future climate projections, starting from simple, conceptual and low-dimensional models up to three-dimensional global models of the Earth system, with a further look at the the models which are now being implemented for future use, so called "digital twins". The course is also intended to provide some hints to build the simplest models independently and discuss their strengths, limitations and uncertainties and to process the outputs of global climate models.
Finally, a further objective is to make the students able to read and understand, based on the topics covered in the course, scientific papers, to know how to autonomously rework the concepts and communicate in a synthetic way their contents.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi
At the end of the course the student will be able to understand the reasons why climate is a complex non-linear system, how it has changed throughout its history and what has changed in the way it changes now; the students will be able to understand which modeling tools are most appropriate to be used depending on the application and purpose; she/he will be able to handle some simple climate models and use simple tools to analyze or at least pre-process the data they provide. The student, finally, will be able to read and understand a scientific paper and expose its contents.- Oggetto:

The method for learning verification will be carried out by means of an oral exam: the student will be likely asked to give a short talk on a topic at his/her choice and to aswer other questions.

- Components of a climate model and their coupling, remarks on the numerical solution of the equations
- Detail on global models and their regional counterpart. Methods of regional downscaling (statistical/stochastic downscaling) from the large to the small scales to obtain estimates of the climate variables at small scales useful to perform impact studies at the local scale.
-Validation of climate models and the importance to integrate models and observations. - Climate variability and climate change: The response of the climate system to external natural and anthropogenic forcing. Concepts of radiative forcing and climate sensitivity. Feedback mechanisms (physical, geochemical, biogeochemical and biogeophysical) as an example of internal climate variability and non-linearity.
